Feelings of anxiety come from apprehension or fear, the source of which is not always recognisable. Feeling threatened by something or someone, or being subjected to long term stress can also bring about anxiety. We all feel anxious at some point in our lives, and how we handle it can be inherited from our parents and our environment, although some people will be more prone to feeling anxious than others.
Feeling anxious in certain times of our lives is a normal instinctual response that is there to protect us, it is the subconscious mind fight or flight survival mechanism in action, usually ready to fly when feeling really anxious. It’s a conflict of interest between the conscious mind and the subconscious mind, it’s where the conscious mind wants to do something and the unconscious mind recalls a similar past event, remembers it as a bad experience and chooses not to go through it again. The more times the event is avoided, the stronger the negative belief system builds, becoming an endless loop that seems to perpetuate and get worse and worse. This process can be the start of a phobic response to the event or situation. With some of these deep fears and phobic responses, they can be traced back to the “Initial Sensitising Event” (ISE) where the subconscious mind first experienced the event and stored it as either dangerous or undesirable.
Because the unconscious mind works on feelings and has a direct link to our physical system, these out way our conscious thoughts of rationalisation in our heads and anxiety takes over accompanied by one or many of the physical symptoms; Trembling, Tense Muscles, Churning Stomach, Nausea, Diarrhoea, Headache, Back Ache, Heart Palpitations, Numbness/Pins and Needles and Sweating or Flushing. If anxiety goes untreated and continues to get worse, panic attacks can start to develop making you become even more anxious than before.
Anxiety actually arises out of your thoughts; it’s the thought of potential danger, not the actual danger that produces the symptoms of anxiety.
When dealing with anxiety, the first thing is to find out how long you’ve been feeling anxious, how often and when it happens, and if there are any underlying issues in the form of psychosis, if so, you may need to be referred on, or get your Doctor’s consent if you have any neurological conditions.
Getting you to relax first is where change starts, and once completely relaxed, changes can be made to how the body responds to seemingly frightening situations. By replacing catastrophic thoughts with truthful statement that explain the symptoms underlying nature and that your physical sensations won’t harm you and will soon go away. By repeating a phrase that counters each symptom, the fear will begin to lessen. Reassuring you that you are always in control, and learning how to relax effectively will help you overcome your irrational fears.
If you’ve been diagnosed or suspect you may have a medical condition, you should consult your GP for advice before starting any alternative therapies or treatments.

Confidence is not just a positive feeling in the body, it is a state of mind that we can have control over. Confidence is something that you can create, it is a belief about yourself that you are special and can achieve and handle anything. We all have times in our lives when we need more confidence, whether we lack confidence in one area of our lives or whether the feeling is more general and enduring, your confidence can improve dramatically if you have the desire to change.
I use a combination of Hypnotherapy and Neuro-Linguistic Programming techniques to help you improve your confidence and self-esteem.
If you feel that you need more confidence in one or several areas of your life, please get in touch.
A phobia is an irrational response to a fear of something, and it stems from our subconscious mind. Although we are all born with two fears, the fear of falling and the fear of loud noises, some fears can be inherited and learned from our friends and family.
There are several types of phobias:
These are single stimulus fears such as heights and confined places etc.
These fears have a number of stimuli; Fear of boats, losing control and the fear of drowning.
A fear of being in public: A fear of blushing or losing control.
These are severe attacks of acute anxiety reactions; there will be an invasion of anxious thoughts and physical symptoms that accompany panic attacks.
The fear of the “Open Marketplace”; a fear of open spaces to the point where some won’t even leave their home.
Phobias are developed after a traumatic event (Initial Sensitising Event) or after a series of traumatic events. You may not fully remember what this event was, and it may have occurred at a young age. Whatever happened may well have been quite harmless, but the memories and associations that accompany it have been locked away in your subconscious mind, and now you have a phobic response to the stimuli. Hypnotherapy can help you to deal with this problem, and overcome your phobia.
I use the most up to date techniques combining Hypnotherapy and Neuro-Linguistic Programming, these techniques can help you to overcome the reasons behind your fear or phobia and desensitize the event so it no longer causes a phobic response. This can help you to respond to the situation in a calm and controlled way, thus feeling much happier and in control of your life.
If you would like to overcome any of your fears or phobias, please call me to discuss your requirements.
We all have habits, some good and some bad, it’s when a bad habit takes over our life and causes us stress and anxiety that it becomes a problem. Habits can seem hard to break and removing a habit can cause distress and create disruption, if you create a void in your life by removing a habit like smoking, that void needs to be filled with something more desirable than the old habit, without this, it can cause distress and anxiety as there is spare time to think about the old habit, and without something to replace it, it can be too tempting to go back to the old comfortable way that we’re so used to.
After all, the subconscious mind doesn’t really like change and likes stability, unless given the choice for something better.
To change any habit, particularly a long-established habit, we need to bypass the critical factor (conscious mind) and go direct to the subconscious mind where all the necessary change work and reprogramming can be done under hypnosis by giving you a strategy that moves you away from the pain of the habit to the pleasures of being free from the habit. Under hypnosis, changes can be reprogrammed so the bad habits are replaced by a more desirable outcome. A smoker knows about all the harm smoking causes to their health along with the costs of smoking, these can be replaced with a vision of a healthy new body that is becoming healthier on a daily basis as the body begins to adjust to the new healthier way, and the money being saved could go towards something they truly want or even a dream holiday. These suggestions would be adapted to the client’s personal goals gathered in the initial consultation.
If you would like to overcome a bad habit that you longer want, please contact me to discuss your goals.
If you are 100% committed to stopping smoking for good, then hypnotherapy can be a very effective treatment in helping you achieve this. Hypnotherapy and Hypnosis is recognised by the British Medical Association as one of the most effective ways to quit smoking.
Hypnotherapy will work regardless of how many cigarettes you smoke a day or how long you have been smoking for. Your 100% commitment is the most important factor in the success of you stopping smoking for good.
Smoking kills around 114,000 people each year, mainly from smoking-related cancers, cardiovascular disease, and emphysema and other chronic lung diseases. Don’t be another statistic, you can change and stop smoking once and for all.
The quit smoking treatment session costs £175, and the session generally lasts between 1 and 1 ½ hours. A stop smoking CD will also be given to you at the end of the session for you to listen to each day, which will reinforce the changes made, keeping you healthy and smoke-free.
• Make it easy for you to stop smoking.
• Reduce unwanted cravings and urges.
• Put you in control again.
• Become a non-smoker.
• Feel healthier and fitter.
• Have more money.
• Feel proud and in control.
• Have more energy.
Stress is a negative emotional experience resulting from a person feeling a mismatch between their environment and their ability to cope with that environment, even a change occurring in a person’s life can cause a fear of that change; these pressures can vary from simple changes in one’s environment, work, family, or social changes, to major life changes like a new job or even bereavement. If we ignore the problem that is causing us stress, it will eventually affect our bodily organs and our general health and also our wellbeing.
The first step would be to examine the general cause or causes of the stress reaction, this would establish what type of stress it might be and how best to treat it. When determining the type of stress associated with you there may be anxiety attached to that stress; this would have to be identified before proceeding for various reasons.
There may be some underlying psychological or physical reasons that are causing the stress that is not best treated by hypnotherapy alone, if there are any such issues you’d be referred on to the appropriate help, or if there is some neurological condition consent from your Doctor must be approved before proceeding. If you have been diagnosed or suspect you may have a medical condition, you should consult your GP for advice before starting any alternative therapies or treatments. If you currently have any kind of stress in your life and would like to be more in control of it, please call me to discuss how I can help you.
Hypnotherapy is highly effective in helping people lose weight safely, naturally and easily, it is effective for weight loss because it is not a diet, it is a lifestyle change! It helps replace the unwanted habits that you may have developed into beneficial new ones.
Diet plans are great if you want to lose weight for a short while, but it can be too easy to put the weight back on again as they don't address the true cause of over eating habits such as; low self-esteem, emotional issues, stress, boredom, comfort eating etc.
You may have found that diets haven't work for you. Most are too strict, boring or difficult to follow. Or, you may have been a yo-yo dieter who piles the pounds back on once the diet ends. If you’ve tried diets before that haven’t worked, it’s time to change your thinking and try something that does work, hypnotherapy!
A lot of people set goals to lose a certain amount of weight, lose the weight then put it all back on again, this is where smart goals come into force. As an example, if you currently weigh 14 stone and your goal is to weigh 12 stone, most people focus on losing the 2 stone, once they’ve achieved losing that weight, their subconscious mind says “Yippee, we’ve lost 2 stone… we can eat again”, then the weight gets piled back on again. Your main goal is to weigh 12 stone, once you’ve achieved your ideal weight your subconscious mind says we’re here at the weight where we want to be, now, let’s maintain our ideal weight of 12 stone.
If you truly want to lose weight successfully and maintain your ideal weight, please call me to discuss your future goals.
